The second story is not bad, but the point of romantic tension, which arises out of a supposed moral obligation of the hero to not woo the heroine as her chaperone, feels somewhat forced, as I'm rather skeptical of the social acceptability of a young male of no blood or familial relation acting as chaperone for a young lady.
